The Switch That Changes Everything

Growing up I used to get the flu every year, but for the past 10 years, I haven't at all.

Stuffy noses and sinus infections where a regular thing too but now, they're history.


When I was in grade school I remember seeing kids my age with birth defects and mental retardation, and parents with aggressive types of cancer, dying young. Just 3 miles from where I grew up, this was happening at unusually high rates, in a neighborhood where there was a Monsanto chemical plant. After this came to light, Monsanto was forced to shut down and relocate. The plant is no longer there, nor the unusually high rate of dysfunction.

During high school and college, I worked at jobs where I had to wear safety equipment like respirators and anti-exposure suits; but since then, I've been lucky enough to work outside in the fresh air.

In my early 20s, I remember doing 5-mile hikes then eating cookies for dinner and waking up feeling hungover, thinking it was from the hike. I also remember being 28 and hiking 28 miles on Day 1 of the PCT, just 3 years after having an ACL/MCL surgery. This time I had eaten dried figs and almond butter for dinner. I woke up the next day feeling so great that I did another 26 miles, followed by 8 more 20+ mile days in a row.


Since the PCT, I've been on the quest to discover the ultimate snack, and along the way, I’ve seen where berries come from and where berry flavoring comes from.



Did you know that what you eat has an impact on more than just your taste buds? It can diminish or improve the landscape, aid in the improvement or pollution of groundwater, and it can affect someone’s life who’s on the other end of it making or growing that product - just for the sake of having a job.


Now, let's get back to snacking...


Cookies or figs?


You see, the difference between eating processed and living foods can make just as profound of a difference when it comes to how much energy I have - meaning how alert and motivated I am - and how fast I recover after exerting myself, or in other words, how soon I’m able to get back up and keep going.


How do I know this?


Because like I said, when I was in my 20’s I thought I was shredding trails. I’d feel wrecked afterward but just thought it was from the trail. Now, I’m in my 40’s and go much bigger, and afterward, it feels like just another day.


What's changed?


I don’t think I’m stronger than I was back then, I think that I’m less affected by the altitude, duration, intensity, and aftereffects of hiking - thanks to making the switch.


This one switch changes everything

Which job would you rather work? Farm or factory?


And how would you rather feel? Processed or alive?

If you want to feel processed, eat processed foods.

If you want to feel alive, eat living foods.
