A MESSAGE TO FUTURE THRU-HIKERS

OF THE ARIZONA TRAIL

Although the Arizona Trail received its National Scenic Trail designation on March 30th, 2009, it wasn't completed until 6 months after I had finished my hike, on December 16th, 2011. The number of people who were out hiking on the AZT in 2011, when I made these films, were very few. The overgrown sections that are seen here in the 4 Peaks and Mazatzal Wilderness areas have been significantly improved upon since my hike. This will not keep the snow from falling but it should help you to avoid what was my biggest and only real complaint of this trip. Otherwise, the AZT as a whole is an incredible adventure that has deservedly been getting more traffic lately. Did you know the AZT is legal for bike-packing? More surprises await! The AZT was not what I expected it to be: a desert hike. Instead, it was a Sky Island hike. I look forward to completing this trail again someday and hope that your own passage thru, should you decide to attempt, is a safe one.
